The Law of Success: An Overview of Napoleon Hill"s Lesson Seven
Lesson Seven in Napoleon Hill's book The Law of Success is entitled Self-Control.
Hill writes, "Enthusiasm is the vital quality that arouses you to action, while self-control is the balance wheel that directs your action so that it will build up and not tear down.
" If you exercise self-control, you will have power to achieve your chief aim as discussed in lesson one.
Well-developed self-control will stimulate imagination and enthusiasm producing action.
If you lack self-control, you may be susceptible to hatred, envy, jealousy, fear, revenge and other negative and destructive emotions.
If you however do have a well-developed self-control, you will not slander others or hate others if you differ in opinion.
Instead, you will endeavor to understand and learn from those who have a different view than your own.
If you have self-control, pessimists and cynics will not negatively affect you.
You will control your own mind and not let others do your thinking.
The inability to control spending is perhaps the most damaging aspect of a lack of self-control.
You must not spend beyond your needs and instead create the habit of saving.
Another destructive form of lack of self-control is talking too much instead of a focus on listening.
Listening often adds to your knowledge, and it requires self-control to be a good listener.
Thought control can give you amazing power to achieve your desires.
Your thoughts are really the only things you can control.
You can choose the dominant thoughts in your mind and can shut out unsupportive or negative thoughts of your own creation or from others.
You will attract to yourself success or failure depending on the thoughts you allow yourself to think.
Therefore, self-control is a matter of thought-control.
By creating and maintaining positive and constructive thoughts that harmonize with your definite chief aim, you will be bringing into physical reality the goal you wish to achieve.
You are the sum of all your prominent thoughts, so thought-control is of critical importance if you wish to create success in any part of your life.
If you are deliberate about what thoughts you dwell upon as well as which thoughts of others you allow into you mind, you will become a person of self-control.
Hill further discusses the Law of Harmonious Attraction and the Law of Retaliation in which like attracts like.
Each person you come in contact with is a reflection of your mental attitude.
So a great deal of self-control must be exerted if you are with someone who is angry and abusing you.
If you retaliate in a like manner, you are being drawn downward to that person's level.
That person is then dominating you.
Instead retaliate with positive behavior, and you will dominate that person.
You receive what you give, so choose kindness.
Hill says, "It is not that which we wish for that comes back to us, but that which we give.
" So remember that your thoughts and actions are similar to a magnet and you will attract to you the same sort of thoughts and actions that you create.
Therefore, create thoughts with care and awareness, using your self-control.
