Hair Bars the New OC Trend?
A growing trend amongst women is beginning to brew in Orange County, California. Nontraditional hair salons known as "bars" are beginning to pop up throughout the So Cal cities and have enticed owners to open more. What is a hair bar you ask? It's a pampering trip to the hairstylist, where they shampoo, skip the cut and finish by blow drying and styling the hair.
These "bars" have gained popularity through their location, price, and results without having to get a haircut. A person can go shopping at a mall with a store such as Nordstrom's and get their hair "blown" without having to go home and doing it themselves. The phenomenon has only begun to catch on like wildfires recently, but are popular nationwide, especially in metropolitan cities like New York.
Orange County's very own, young Irvine-based Drybar, has sixteen stores nationwide and is only two years old. You can find Drybar at locations from Fashion Island at Newport Beach, Scottsdale and in the Flatiron District of New York. Perhaps it's its very own experienced executives that have made this company popular. The executives on board were previously executives at companies such Yahoo, Pinkberry and Jamba Juice.
Drybar's unstoppable force has locked down and signed leases for an additional seven locations to open later this year at places such as Bethesda, Md.; Santa Monica; and the Upper East Side and Tribeca in New York. However, their ambition does not stop there. If all goes well, they expect to open a total of 44 more locations reported the OC Register.
"We're learning that almost all women, regardless of age or demographic, love getting a good blowout," Drybar Chief Executive Officer Michael Landau said. "Coming to Drybar is a relaxing little affordable luxury and escape that makes you look and feel great. We think there's quite a lot of demand for that."
Express salons, according to experts are expected to flourish during near recession times. Even upscale stores such as Nordstrom have partnered up with express salon companies. They see an opportunity of growth that will also improve their sales. Cheri Botiz, national beauty and fragrance director for Nordstrom, said: "For some of our customers, getting a blowout is a regular part of her beauty upkeep, like getting a manicure or pedicure."
Next time you are out shopping and feel that you could benefit from a little beauty upkeep, don't forget to swing by an express hair salon and get your hair pampered.
