How to Determine Eye Color in Infants
- 1). Write down the eye colors of both parents and both sets of their parents. If the colors are mostly the same, there is a very high probability that your baby will have the same color. If there are many different eye colors in the family tree, your baby has a good chance at having any of these eye colors.
- 2). Find a calculator online that allows you to find out the probability of your infant's eye color inheritance.
- 3). Plug into the calculator the colors of the parents' eyes and their parents' eyes to see the probability of your infant inheriting a certain eye color.
- 4). Read the percentages for the infant. If the results show a 20 percent probability for hazel eyes, 40 percent for blue, and 40 percent for brown eyes, it may be difficult to predict an eye color.
- 5). Watch your infant's eye color develop over time. Many Caucasian babies are born with gray or blue eyes, which then turn into their "true" eye color by about 12 months of age. The color may get slightly darker or lighter over the next few years.
