Latchkey Kids Vs Daycares
Is it better to leave your kids home alone than taking them to a daycare? I never had the experience of being brought up in a daycare.
I was always provided for by family.
Around the age of nine I became a latchkey kid coming home everyday from school to an empty house.
It is recommended that a child under the age of 12 should not be left home alone.
Children under the age of 7 still need structure from adults and ages 7-10 year olds shouldn't be left alone for extended periods of time.
Seconds and minutes make a difference in tragedy.
Parents shouldn't leave children in the home alone for any reason such as going to the store around the corner.
My mother did this to me as a child.
There was a store at the corner of our block and a house was separating our house from the store so it was a few steps away.
Parents have been doing this for years and will continue to do this until something tragic happens.
Some states have age requirements for staying home alone.
My state, Kentucky, has no age restrictions for latchkey kids.
You have to take into consideration the maturity level of your child but also you must consider the actions of others such as a home invasion or possibly a medical emergency.
Parents are either single or both parents are working and most can't afford daycare.
I understand the cost of daycare is expensive, I was paying $500 a month for one child in daycare.
Parents don't feel comfortable leaving their small children in a strangers care.
My daughter was 6 months old when she first went to daycare and stayed in them until she was 6 of which she allegedly encountered sexual abuse in 2 daycares.
I think it is unacceptable behavior for any parent to leave their child home alone but I can understand some reasons for it because they feel their children would be safer at home than in a strange daycare.
Equally being a latchkey kid or being in a daycare can be dangerous in both situations.
Your child could get hurt in a daycare or molested but at least you have an option to sue or take some sort of action towards their negligence.
No one is to blame but you when you leave your own child home alone and I'm sure the guilt of knowing you could've prevented it would eat away at you unless you are heartless.
Lets focus on keeping our children safer by taking them with you, child proof your homes, investing in getting to know your child care provider by doing research and most importantly trust your instincts about your daycare.
If something doesn't feel right it probably isn't right.
God Bless.
