- 1). Look to see what name is engraved on your canning jars. If it says Mason, you can order lids for them from Bernardin Home Canning Company in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. They have been in business for more than 100 years and take orders online. If you don't see what you need on the regular Bernardin product list, click "Order Online" and look in Golda's Kitchen for jars and lids under the "Canning" category. Golda's Kitchen also has useful tips for canning and even has books you can order on the subject.
- 2). Decide between the two types of food preservation lids available from Canada. First are metal snap lids, which are good for heat canning only. Second are freezer jar lids, which are used for freezing food, usually in plastic jars instead of glass ones, to avoid breakage. Even if you don't intend to freeze any food, you might like to have a supply of Bernardin's plastic Mason jar caps on hand for times when you'd like to use them to store other things.
- 3). Count how many jars you have of each size. If you are canning pickles or large-sectioned fruit, you will want to use wide-mouth jars. Bernardin measures its canning lids in metric, so their wide-mouth lids will say 86 mm. Gem lids, which are only manufactured in Canda, are 78 mm. Standard-size lids are 70 mm. If you have screw bands for all your jars, you can save money by ordering just the snap lids. Bernardin sells snap lids by the half-dozen or by the dozen. If you are an avid canner, you can also order them by the case.
