How electrolysis helps the transgender community
Every male-to-female trans person can be helped on their life journey by electrolysis. In fact successful permanent hair removal is a huge part of a successful transition. A trans person will have extensive and dense hair growth and due to the circumstances of their situation require not only permanent hair removal but hair removal in many areas. Transgender hair removal demands more advanced electrolysis skills and abilities which differ from other clients. The density and strength of facial hair in a trans person in particular is excessive and unparalleled and therefore requires many hours of work over a very long time. Their needs and requirements vary to the average client and therefore specialised electrolysis training is recommended so that electrolysists are educated and informed and best able to help them.
Trans people suffer from gender dysphoria which is where a person feels trapped within a body of the wrong sex. In order to successfully achieve their ambition of changing gender many surgical operations and several non surgical treatments are undertaken. In addition to these treatments hair removal methods such as Laser and IPL which both offer hair reduction and electrolysis which offers permanent hair removal are needed to complete their successful transition. Trans people, as with all clients, should always be treated by the electrolysist with dignity, decorum and sensitivity upholding their privacy at all times and with the ultimate aim of helping them achieve a successful transition and improve their lives.
It is estimated that one in 4,000 people in the UK is receiving medical help for gender dysphoria, and indicators show there are many more people with the condition who have yet to seek help and that the numbers are growing.
The average age of a TG person ‘transitioning' is 42yrs resulting in their hair growth often having a high percentage of grey or white hairs thus leaving electrolysis hair removal as the only option as laser and ipl hair reduction methods are only able to work on dark hair.
Electrolysis, Laser or IPL - Laser hair removal machines have the potential to provide a reduction of hair growth and they are legally allowed to say they offer permanent ‘reduction' of hair. Electrolysis remains the only method effectively providing permanent REMOVAL of hair on ALL skin and hair types and colours. The systems complement each other beautifully and are the ‘answer' for the TG client.
Electrolysis is not just a one trick pony however and Advanced Electrolysis can be used to treat 20+ skin conditions and blemishes also. Therefore as well as electrolysis being a recognised safe and effective answer, when performed correctly for hair removal, it is the answer for treatment of a number of diverse unwanted skin conditions and blemishes.
A Trans client should always look for well trained expert practitioner with current CPD and knowledgeable up to date skills. They are looking for a practitioner who will:
-Effectively assess the unwanted hair/beard growth and the general condition of the skin in the affected (treatment) area
-Understand the client's particular needs, and discuss treatment goals
-Discuss the electrolysis method(s) and provide a treatment plan (extent of treatment required, weekly hours of treatment, etc.)
-Discuss the methods for controlling/alleviating after-effects, such as swelling, infection, etc.
-Discuss the methods of pain control
-If genital work is required this must be undertaken well in advance of sexual reassignment surgery and the contact details of the surgeon should be provided so that the practitioner can liaise and plan the treatment as appropriate.
Hormone therapy often assists with the lessening of bodily hair and other methods may be used but for beard removal (and genital work) to be successful, intensive electrolysis hair removal is a necessity.
Highly skilled and/or specially trained Electrolysists only should carry out this work and specialised electrolysis training courses are available to support and assist electrolysists with the Trans community.
