    Boot Care Products

    • Irish Setter Mountain Claw XT boots are a made of a combination of Gore-Tex, leather and nylon. Therefore, you will need cleaning and care products for all three. It is highly recommended that you use the Irish Setter line of cleaning and protection products; however, if these cannot be obtained, gentle water-based products such as Nikwax or Granger also work well.

No matter which brand you use, read the bottle and make sure it is compatible with your boots (you don't want to get the wrong type as each brand makes a number of different products).

    Cleaning

    • To get the most out of your boots, keep them clean.

Red Wing recommends that you dry-brush boots after each use and before washing to remove harsh debris that may scratch the boot while washing. Wash your boots with warm water, boot cleaner and a stiff brush. Allow to air-dry (do not use heaters or hairdryers as this will weaken the seams and remove oils from the leather, causing damage to the boots).

    Conditioning

    • Using a boot conditioner on your boots will keep your them supple longer. Conditioner goes on clean, dry boots. Apply small amounts to a soft cloth and rub into the boot's leather outer skin only and not its fabric lining.

    Waterproofing

    • These boots are waterproofed before they are sold; however, after time the waterproofing wears off and needs to be reapplied.

Most waterproofing products come in bottles with a sponge applicator; to use, simply shake, turn upside down and rub onto clean, dry boots. Read the manufacturer's directions; some products require buffing with a soft cloth afterward; others do not.

    Storing

    • Clean your boots before storing them for any length of time. Make sure they are completely dry, inside and out.

Use tissue paper to stuff each boot to keep their shape. Placing a fabric softener sheet in the box and/or in each boot with the tissue paper will help absorb any moisture and odors. Store the boots in the original box in a dry, temperature-consistent place.
