How to Hydrate Highlighted Hair
- 1). Select a shampoo and conditioner that are specially formulated for color-treated hair. These products should add needed moisture and vibrancy back into the dyed part of your hair. Avoid shampoos that have high alcohol contents -- these shampoos will make your hair even drier.
- 2). Wash your hair every other day, at most. Your hair secretes natural oils that keep your hair moist. Washing your hair too often can strip your hair of these necessary oils, resulting in dehydration, especially in your already-delicate highlights.
- 3). Use a deep-conditioning mask on your hair at least once a week. Check the label of the product you choose; it should tell you how long you should leave the product in your hair. The extra moisture offered by such products will keep your highlights looking healthy instead of limp and frizzy.
- 4). Avoid using a blowdryer; with highlights, it is best to let your hair air dry. Hairdryers are notorious for drying out hair and causing damage. You'll also want to give your hair straightener and curling iron a rest.
- 5). Limit your hair's exposure to the Sun; if you will be outside for a prolonged period of time, wear a hat over your highlights. Chemically treated hair is especially prone to the negative effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays.
