How to Make Waist Sarongs
- 1). Choose your fabric. Light muslins, silk chiffons and other airy fabrics are ideal. Choose light colors as these reflect heat rather than absorb it, keeping you cool. Dark colors will have the opposite effect. Choose a fabric with a pattern that suits your mood or outfit.
- 2). Use the tape measure to determine the distance between the top of your hip bones and your ankles. Add 1/2 inch to this measurement and make a note of it. This will be the width of your sarong cloth. The piece of cloth a sarong is created from usually is about 72 inches long, so make a note of this measurement also. Use these two measurements to draw a rectangle on the wrong side of your fabric.
- 3). Cut out the fabric rectangle, and lay it flat on your work surface. Fold each raw edge of the fabric over to the wrong side by 1/4 inch and pin into place. Sew a single line of stitches to secure each fold, removing the pins as you go. These hems give a finish to the raw fabric on all four sides, preventing them from unraveling.
- 4). Bring the long edge of the rectangle up to your waist and wrap it around you. Then hold both ends in front of you, one end in each hand. Pull the right-hand end to your right, and tuck the left-hand end over the right end. Pull both ends tight, and then tie them in a knot in front of you to secure the sarong.
