- 1). Test the pH of the water with a pool test kit. Fill the comparator holder with water from the pool to the suggested mark. Add five drops of R-0004. Replace the cap and turn upside down a few times to mix.
- 2). Look at the color comparison chart to match the color of your sample to where the ideal reading should be according to the chart. If the pH is low, you must use soda ash to raise it. The desired range is between 7.4 and 7.6 on the color chart. Do not throw out your sample just yet.
- 3). Open your bottle of base demand reagent in your test kit. Remove the top of the comparator. Carefully add a drop of the solution in the bottle. Repeat this step until your water in the tube matches the ideal location on the color chart. Keep track of how many drops you added to achieve this color.
- 4). Look at the chart for increasing pH levels. Look for the number of drops you added to the comparator, then look for the size of your pool in gallons to find out how much soda ash to add to the deep end of the pool.
- 5). Sprinkle the soda ash in the deep end of the pool as you move around the deep end. Never pour the soda ash in at one place, walk and pour until it is gone.
- 6). Test the water again hours later and repeat steps 1 to 5 if needed.
