Alternative for Bumpits
- The key to successful backcombing is preparing your hair properly. When you wash your hair, use volumizing shampoo and conditioner to give you hair extra volume. It is easier to backcomb hair that has not been freshly washed. The natural oils in your hair help the backcombing to stay in place better. If you do need to wash your hair that day, wash it early in the day to give you hair a few hours to get "dirty" again. Comb your hair into your natural part, and lift up sections of the hair along the sides and crown of your hair. Spray a volumizing mouse, such as Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Spray Mousse or Alterna Life Volumizing Spray Mousse, directly on the roots of the hair and rub it in slightly.
- Use a round paddle brush to blow dry your hair straight. Dry the hair in sections, using the brush to pull the hair taut on the underside of the hair. Lift the hair as you are drying it and point the dryer at the roots. For a final burst of volume, hang your head upside down and blow hot air on the crown of your head.
- To get the Bumpit look, begin by separating a section of hair straight across the back of your head. Make sure the section of hair is thin, because this will help you gain more volume as you backcomb in layers. Hold the hair straight up and use a fine-toothed comb to push the hair downward. As you comb the hair back towards the root, a "nest" of frizzy hair will begin to form. Backcomb until the nest has reached up about 3 inches of the section of hair. Spray the hair with a medium-hold hairspray, lay it forward gently and move on to the next section of hair. Do this down the back of your skull, then lay all of the sections of hair back down properly. Use a larger toothed comb to smooth the hair down, but be carefully not to pick out the backcombing underneath. Finish the look by spraying it with extra-hold hairspray, and pull the sides back, wear it in a ponytail or place a headband in front of your bump.
