Restroom Towel Dispensers Versus Air Driers
You're using a public restroom, and you just washed your hands.
The restroom has a towel dispenser and an air dryer.
Which device do you choose to dry your hands? In order to keep your hands clean, choose the towel dispenser.
And if it is one of those sensor-operated, hands-free dispensers, so much the better for avoiding germs left by prior users.
If you must operate the towel dispenser, use your wrist or arm to do so in order to keep your hands clean.
Save the towel if you need to open the door with your hand and use it to exit.
Most establishments provide a trash bin near the door so that you can throw in the towel.
Whichever method you use, you must dry your hands thoroughly because germs love water.
Recently, a study tested both drying methods and found that rubbing the hands under a blower causes a skin-on-skin friction.
This releases germs that live deep in the pores.
People tend to use an air dryer to avoid using paper because of the environment.
If you choose to use the blower, don't rub your hands.
Instead, hold your hands palms up for at least 30 seconds.
This will leave your hands dry and the "bad" germs will not multiply and mix with the "good" flora.
Wiping your hands on your clothing will just recontaminate them.
I prefer using a clean towel to dry my hands.
That way I know that I did not pick up any harmful germs.
