    Uniforms

    • School uniforms in the 1980s differed among institutions, but most uniforms included khaki or navy pants and button-up shirts for boys. Girls wore plaid skirts below the knee or jumpers and blouses. These outfits often matched the school's colors and were modest in design. They did not reflect many of the bright fashion trends of the decade.

    Labels

    • Sporting large, colorful and noticeable designer labels in was popular in children's clothing during the 1980s. Adidas, Nike, Reebok and Espirit produced canvas sneakers, windbreakers and T-shirts with their logos on them. In schools without uniforms, these clothes were allowed provided they were appropriate.

    Jackets

    • Denim jackets were popular in children's and teen clothing in the 1980s. School-age children often applied iron-on patches or embroidered and beaded embellishments onto their jackets and denim ware. Army jackets, jackets with neon colors, piping or asymmetrical zippers were also popular as a result of pop culture fashion.

    Athletic Clothing

    • Active apparel such as skiwear, tracksuits, sweatpants and sweatshirts became common everyday clothing for school children in the 1980s. These outfits featured tapered legs, bright colors and bold geometric patterns. Teens and high school students also sported leggings and legwarmers. Wool, polyester and Lycra spandex were common clothing materials.
