How to Build Skateboard Trucks

    • 1). Trucks can be broken down into several different parts. The hangar is the largest piece of the truck, and it is triangular in shape. The axle is a bar that runs through either corner of the hangar, and each end holds a wheel. The hangar is connected to the kingpin, which is a large bolt running through the center of the truck. The entire truck is connected to the board by a baseplate and a set of bolts.

    • 2). There are different types of trucks for different types of skaters. If an individual is into pulling new school skateboard tricks, he might have a preference for a short skateboard with a steep concave on the nose and tail. New school trucks mimic the board--lightweight and compact. Skaters who prefer speed and carving ride longboards, which have a long and heavy deck with minimal concave. The trucks are large and strong, designed to hold wheels built for speed and turning.

    • 3). Assemble your trucks. Place your bearings into each skateboard wheel. Remove the nuts and washers that come with the trucks. When placing the wheels onto the axles, do it in this order: washer, wheel with bearings, washer and axle nut. Tighten the nut.

    • 4). Remove the nuts, then place your mounting bolts in the deck. Turn the deck upside down, with the bolts sticking up, and slide the trucks onto the bolts. Tighten everything by attaching the nuts onto the bolts.
