Emotions and the Heart

When our thoughts are involved we find it natural to relate directly to the physical brain and gestures of hands on head are common in intense thought concentration.
We also can suffer with headaches when trying to engage in difficult intellectual matters.
When our emotions are involved we must correspondingly relate to the physical organ of the heart with hand on heart being a symbol of sincere affection or intense loyalty.
Our heart can cause us physical discomfort if our emotions are causing us difficulties.
The fact that this interaction occurs is recognized in psychosomatic medicine.
The statistic that still prevails in health research in western countries that heart disease is the greatest cause of mortality jolts us into consideration that the fundamental psychological problem suffered by so many in the community is related to their emotional life.
It logically follows that if we wish to reduce the prevalence of physical heart disease, we must work on additional treatment other than the regularly prescribed dietary correction, stress relief and surgical intervention.
We must focus upon the common need to understand and satisfy our emotional needs.
In the current social climate the need for love tends to be interpreted as a sexual one.
There is a serious limitation here.
However, regardless of individual attitude love retains its place as the supreme human emotion.
As natural affection cannot be analyzed but flows spontaneously from the heart of a person, it is only within the individual can be found the key to understand causes and reactions to expressions of love.
But we know that there are all kinds of love from the gentlest compassion to the most ardent passion.
We each have to choose to cultivate and increase our capacity for love and all the other positive emotions and find a satisfactory and appropriate release of our feelings and affections.
These must be harmonious and in accord with our personality and our inner being.
If we feel love and are free to express it in this way, harmoniously, we are less likely to have to entertain heart problems and tangles not only in our emotional life but in our physical heart also.
It follows that we should apply our studies and attention to our emotions as a prime need.
Without emotional comfort we are not likely to be free to unveil the mysteries of the human mind.
